BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team fell by a 3-1 margin to Cal State Bakersfield in the Aggies' season opener Friday at Main Soccer Field in Bakersfield, Calif.

With the loss, UC Davis opens the 2010 season with a record of 0-1 while Cal State Bakersfield moves to 2-0 overall.

The Aggies started strong offensively with shots from Michael Garrick and Rene Cuellar, but the Roadrunners scored first as a breakdown in the UC Davis defense resulted in an own goal.

UC Davis continued to attack the goal with shots from freshman Kevin Schulte and three attempts from junior Lance Patterson. The score would remain 1-0 in favor of the Roadrunners as the teams reached halftime.

In the 62nd minute, Cal State Bakersfield took a 2-0 advantage when Jesus Sanchez scored past UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan. Sanchez received a pass from Ernesto Hinojosa, took McCowan on and slotted a shot to the lower right corner of the net.

The Roadrunners kept up their strong attack, but UC Davis answered with a shot from John Joslin in the 77th minute.

Cal State Bakersfield would score their third goal in the 84th minute as Wayne Lampart's cross towards the far post found Keeyan Ghazanfarpour, who headed the ball into the back of the net.

Patterson would score UC Davis' lone goal of the game in the 85th minute. He received a pass from Alex Aguiar then fired a shot from 20 yards out to the upper left corner.

Patterson finished with four shots while Schulte recorded two shots to lead the Aggies. For Cal State Bakersfield, Gyasi Zardes had four shots while Evan Fassler took three shots.

McCowan finished with four saves while Cal State Bakersfield keeper Eric Shannon had one save.

UC Davis returns to action Sunday in its home opener as the Aggies face San Jose State at 5 p.m. at Aggie Soccer Field.
