SEATTLE - Junior Casey McCool assisted freshman Zach Portillos on a goal in the 23rd minute to lift host Washington to a 1-0 victory over UC Davis in the Husky Fever Classic men's soccer tournament at Husky Soccer Stadium Sunday.
The Aggies fall to 2-6 overall, suffering their fourth straight loss. The Huskies improve to 6-1-1 for the year.
After outshooting its guest by a 4-2 margin during the early proceedings, Washington broke the scoreless tie when McCool found Portillos open along the right flank. Portillos proceeded to send a shot over the head of UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan and into the net at the 22:56 mark.
The Aggies threatened to tie the match later in the first half, as Kevin Schulte, Alex Aguiar and Chris Beville all fired shots. However, each was blocked and deflected past the UW goal line, resulting in corner kicks. Sophomore forward Dan Reese led UC Davis with three shots overall, including the lone attempt on frame. The Huskies' freshman keeper Spencer Richey was there for the save.
Washington held the match edge in shots, 14-11; and corner kicks, 5-4.
The Aggies begin Big West Conference play in a road contest at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
