SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The UC Davis women's soccer team scored in the fifth minute of action and held on to a 1-0 win over crosstown rival Sacramento State Friday at Hornet Soccer Field in the season opener for both teams.
UC Davis now stands at 1-0 and takes the first Causeway Cup victory of the year from Sacramento State, which drops to 0-1 on the year.
The Aggies started strong offensively and peppered the Sacramento State goal with early shots from Lisa Kemp and Samantha Faber.
Freshman Mary Beth Mazurek then took a corner kick at the 4:48 mark which found Kemp at the near post. After a couple dribbles, Kemp slotted a pass in front of the net where Allison Kelly redirected the ball from five yards out past Sacramento State keeper Savannah Abercrombie. The goal was Kelly's first career score.
UC Davis would continue to attack throughout the first half, recording six shots to Sacramento State's one.
In the second half it was the Aggie defense's turn to shine as UC Davis held off 10 shots from the Hornets throughout the period. Junior goalkeeper Maria Magana recorded her only save of the half as she blocked a shot from Sacramento State's Victoria Ramirez.
Kemp led the UC Davis offense with three total shots, two of which were on goal, while Faber and Kelly each recorded two attempts.
For Sacramento State, Ramirez led all attackers with four shots while Erin Tarantino posted two shots.
Kathleen Brandl, who started in goal for UC Davis, held Sacramento State scoreless for 45 minutes before Magana entered the game in the second half. Abercrombie finished with three saves for the Hornets.
UC Davis returns to action Friday, Sept. 3 as the Aggies travel to Eugene, Ore. for the Univ. of Oregon Nike Invitational. The Aggies will play host Oregon Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. before facing Oregon State Sunday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m.
