NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge's Paul Tremlin threw a complete game and allowed UC Davis only one earned run as the Matadors took an 11-1 victory Saturday to even the Big West Conference series.
UC Davis is now 18-20 overall and 3-8 in Big West action while Cal State Northridge improves to 22-18 on the year and 4-7 in league play.
Tremlin gave up one earned run on six hits while striking out five Aggie batters to get the win and move to 6-5 overall.
Senior Sean Watson gave up four earned runs on six hits in 4.2 innings and moved to 1-3 on the year with the loss. Watson also struck out three and walked two.
Scott Heinig provided 3.1 innings of relief for the Aggies and gave up seven runs on nine hits and struck out four with two walks.
UC Davis' only run of the game came in the third inning. Justin Andrade, in his first start of the year, led off the inning with a double right center field, then advanced to third after Scott Kalush singled to right field. Andrade then scored off a sacrifice fly by Seth Batty.
The Matadors evened the score at one run apiece in the bottom half of the inning after Drew Muren scored off a triple by C.J. Belanger.
Cal State Northridge would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth by way of a solo home run by Dominic D'Anna. The Matadors would go on to score multiple runs over the next four innings, including a three-run home run in the eighth, while holding off the UC Davis offense.
Kalush led the Aggies, going 2-for-3, while Paul Politi went 1-for-3 with a double.
Belanger went 3-for-5 with one hit, three RBI, a double and a triple to lead Cal State Northridge. Dominic Piazza went 2-for-3 with a double while Ryan Pineda was 2-for-5 with four RBI.
UC Davis and Cal State Northridge will conclude the series Sunday at 1 p.m. Sophomore righty Scott Lyman will start on the mound for UC Davis while Cal State Northridge will throw Alex Muren.
