DAVIS, Calif. - UC San Diego edged UC Davis, 4-3, Friday afternoon in a non-conference men's tennis match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Tritons (11-9) took two out three in doubles before winning three more times in singles. Nic Amaroli won twice for UC Davis (6-10), including a thrilling come-from-behind victory in singles.
In doubles, the Aggies took an early lead when Amaroli and Tyler Lee defeated Sam Ling and Junya Yoshida, 8-2, at No. 3. Moments later, the Tritons evened doubles with a win at No. 2. It would take another 22 minutes to decide the game's first point as the match at No. 1 went to a tiebreaker. UCSD's Chapman Chan and Erik Elliott eventually defeated Hunter Lee and Nick Lopez, 9-8, including 7-3 in the tiebreaker. That gave UC San Diego a 1-0 lead heading to singles.
The first two singles matches to finish did so in straight sets. Ling was the first off at No. 3 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Chris Aria to give UCSD a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later, the Aggies earned their first point as Toki Sherbakov finished off Chan by a score of 6-2, 6-2. It was Sherbakov's fifth straight win and his 11th this spring.
It would be a half-hour before another match finished, but it would also go to the Aggies. Amaroli was busy putting together an impressive comeback against Vincent Nguyen at No. 5. The Triton won the first set 6-3 and led Amaroli 4-1 in the second. From that point, Amaroli won 11 straight games to claim a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory and put the Aggies up 3-2 for the moment.
Twenty minutes later, UC San Diego evened the score at 3-3 when Yoshida overcame a first-set loss to Connor Coates on his way to a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win. In the last match to finish, the Aggies' Hunter Lee tried to labor through cramping but ultimately fell to Jake Fellow at No. 4. The final score was 2-6, 6-2, 2-2, ret.
UC Davis returns to action Saturday when it hosts Portland State at 10:30 a.m. The Aggies conclude the weekend Sunday when they host Portland at 10 a.m.
