Aggies Fall To Matadors, 6-1

April 6, 2010

DAVIS, Calif. - Cal State Northridge defeated UC Davis, 6-1, Tuesday afternoon in a Big West Conference women's tennis match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The loss snapped the Aggies' seven-match winning streak and was just their first at home this season. CSUN (9-6, 3-3 Big West) swept through doubles before taking five out of six in singles. UC Davis fell to 9-8 overall and 2-4 in the Big West.

The first doubles match to finish was on court one where Brooke Doane and Anna Yang defeated the Aggies' Heryzl Legaspi and Desiree Stone, 8-3. It would be another 20 minutes before one of the two remaining matches would be decided. The clinching match came at No. 2 where Nina Jaworowski and Whitney Paluch came from behind to defeat Ellie Edles and Dahra Zamudio, 9-7. The third match also went to the Matadors with Maria Pistalu and Nigora Sirojiddinova holding off Lauren Curry and Noelle Eades, 8-6.

It was a promising to start to singles for UC Davis as Zamudio cruised past Doane at No. 2, 7-5, 6-0. That tied the match at 1-1 but would turn out to the lone victory for the Aggies. For Zamudio, the win upped her personal winning streak to eight.

Three minutes later, the Matadors regained the lead with a straight sets victory at No. 6. It would be another 20 minutes before Cal State Northridge made it 3-1 with a victory at No. 3.

The remaining three matches all went to a third set. At No. 1, Stone won the first set before Jaworowski countered with a set two victory. The opposite was true on courts four and five where Curry and Edles were trying to rally from first-set losses. Curry came back at No. 4 to win the second set while Edles did the same at No. 5.

The clinching match turned out to be on court four as Paluch completed a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Curry to make it 4-1. Edles and Pistalu played a set tiebreaker with the score 4-4 in the third, and Pistalu claimed the victory, 7-5, 3-6, 5-4 (7-4). Stone trailed 5-2 in the third set before retiring.

UC Davis returns to action this weekend when it plays at Pacific on Saturday before facing Santa Clara on the road on Sunday.
