April 18, 2010

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield jumped to a quick 7-1 lead and never looked back as the Roadrunners topped UC Davis 19-8 in the final game of a nonconference series Sunday at Hardt Field.

UC Davis now stands at 16-16 overall, while Cal State Bakersfield moves to 17-17 on the year.

Freshman CJ Blom, who now stands at 1-1 on the year, gave up eight runs on eight hits in two innings of work before being relieved by Nathan Slater. Slater struck out five and only walked one while giving up four runs in five hits in 3.2 innings of relief work.

Justin Schafer led the Aggie offense as he went 2-for-3 with one run and one RBI while Paul Politi was 2-for-5. Kyle Mihaylo knocked in two RBI and was 1-for-3 on the day.

UC Davis scored the first run of the game in the second inning, but Cal State Bakersfield rebounded quickly with seven runs in the bottom half of the inning before adding another run in the third to take an 8-2 lead.

The Aggies cut the 'Runner lead in half with two runs in the sixth. Kevin Grove reached first base after being walked, then scored off an RBI double by Schafer. Schafer then advanced to third on a groundout by Scott Heylman. UC Davis put runners on the corners as David Popkins was walked and scored the second run of the inning when Scott Lyman singled to right field to score Schafer.

The Cal State Bakersfield bats remained hot, however, as the Roadrunners posted four runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to a 12-4 advantage. The Roadrunners followed that with five additional runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

UC Davis fought back with four runs in the top of the eighth. Pinch hitter Justin Andrade was walked, then advanced to second base after Heylman was hit by a pitch. The Aggies loaded the bases with no outs as Alex Dreyfuss stepped in to pinch hit and was also walked. Seth Batty then hit a single to right field to score Andrade and Roadrunner pitcher Spenser Messmore walked Kyle Mihaylo, allowing another Aggie run to cross.

After a pitching change, Eric Johnson walked with the bases still loaded with no outs to bring the score to 17-7 before Batty scored the Aggies' final run of the game off a fielder's choice from Kyle Sanders.

The Roadrunners sealed the win with two additional runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Brandon Boren was 3-for-5 with three RBI for Cal State Bakersfield while Joey Mills went 4-for-5 with three runs and four RBI.

UC Davis will travel to Reno to face Nevada Tuesday at 6 p.m.
