DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis made a bid to knock off No. 67 UC Irvine Saturday afternoon but fell, 4-3, in the Big West Conference women's tennis match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The win improved the Anteaters to 9-10 overall and 5-2 in the Big West. UC Davis finished its regular season 9-10 overall and 2-6 in the Big West.
The highly competitive match started with UCI winning two out of three in doubles for an early 1-0 lead. The first match to finish was at No. 3 where Brooke Bartlett and April Bishahart defeated Lauren Curry and Noelle Eades, 8-2. The Aggies evened things with a win at No. 1 as seniors Herzyl Legaspi and Desiree Stone posted an 8-2 win over Hannah Holladay and Becka Kwan. That left it up to the result at No. 2 where the Anteaters claimed an 8-5 win by Courtney Byron and Kristina Smith over Ellie Edles and Dahra Zamudio.
All but one of the singles matches finished in straight sets. The first was on court two where Zamudio defeated Bishahart, 6-4, 6-4. Next off was Kwan at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Curry to give UCI a 2-1 lead.
The Aggies would pull even when Sidney Brady defeated Holladay, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 6. The lead shifted back to UC Irvine as Kristina Smith defeated Edles at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1.
Meanwhile, the only match to go to a third set finished at No. 1. Stone completed a 6-1, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Byron to tie the contest at 3-3. At the same time, Bartlett was completing a 6-1, 7-6 victory over Legaspi at No. 3. The Anteater won the second-set tiebreaker, 10-8.
The match was the last at home for Legaspi and Stone, who were honored prior to the contest as part of Senior Day.
UC Davis will next be in action at the end of the month at the Big West Tournament in Indian Wells, Calif.
