LONG BEACH, Calif. - A Big West Conference women's tennis battle also featured a battle with the weather, but No. 46 Long Beach State finally prevailed with a 7-0 victory over visiting UC Davis Saturday afternoon. The match was delayed by almost four hours by morning rain. In the end, the 49ers swept singles and doubles to stay perfect in the Big West.
Long Beach State (8-2, 4-0 Big West) began singles with a victory at No. 6 to take an initial 1-0 lead. Sarah Cantlay followed at No. 5 with a straight sets victory at No. 5 over Ellie Edles to make it 2-0. Next to finish was the match on court one where Jaklin Alawi posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Desiree Stone to draw the 49ers within one point of clinching the win.
Deborah Armstrong provided that win when she defeated Herzyl Legaspi, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4. LBSU went on to win two more times to take a 6-0 lead into doubles. The 49ers won at No. 2, followed by wins at No. 3 and No. 1 to conclude the contest.
The loss drops UC Davis to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in the Big West. The Aggies will be back in action Sunday when they play at UC Riverside.
