PORTLAND, Ore. - UC Davis was defeated by Portland, 5-2, Sunday in a non-conference men's tennis match at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center in Portland. Despite the setback, the Aggies posted a 2-1 record in their three contests over the weekend. Sunday's match featured the Pilots winning the doubles point before claiming four wins in singles. Toki Sherbakov and Connor Coates accounted for the Aggies' points.
Portland (3-3) won matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to solidify the first point of the day. At No. 3, UC Davis (4-3) picked up a win from Nic Amaroli and Tyler Lee. The duo defeated Geoff Hernandez and Nick Wales, 8-7, by winning the match tiebreaker, 7-1.
In singles, Hernandez was the first to finish with a straight sets victory over Chris Aria at No. 3. The Pilots made it 3-0 when Filip Zivkovic also won in two sets at No. 1. Sherbakov pulled UC Davis within 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 2.
Portland clinched the overall victory with a win at No. 4 and added another at No. 5. Coates remained perfect on the season with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Jackson Martin at No. 6. The Aggie freshman is now 5-0 this spring and has won all but one of those matches in straight sets. Sherbakov, another freshman, has been near-perfect with a 6-1 mark in dual action. He won all three singles matches over the weekend, starting out at No. 3 and playing at No. 2 on Saturday and Sunday.
UC Davis is next in action Feb. 19 when it hosts Loyola Marymount in what will be its home opener at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
