PORTLAND, Ore. - UC Davis defeated Montana State, 4-3, Saturday in a non-conference men's tennis match at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center in Portland. It was the second straight victory for the Aggies and their third in the past four matches. UC Davis (4-2) had to win four times in singles after dropping the doubles point.
UC Davis received singles wins from Toki Sherbakov, Connor Coates, Tyler Lee and Hunter Lee. It was Hunter Lee's come-from-behind win at No. 4 that proved to be the decisive match. The Aggie senior defeated Esteban Ferrero, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the last match to finish to give UC Davis the victory.
The Aggies actually trailed 2-0 and 3-1 as singles developed. With just three courts available for play, the top half of the order squared off first. The Bobcats won at No. 1 to take a 2-0 lead. Sherbakov fought off a first-set loss to win in three sets at No. 2 over Fletcher Keyes, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. That made it 2-1 before MSU won at No. 3 to lead 3-1.
The next set of singles was the bottom half of the lineup, and the Aggies won all three matches. Coates was the first to win at No. 6, followed by a straight sets victory by Tyler Lee at No. 5 to tie the overall match at 3-3. That set the stage for Hunter Lee's win at No. 4. The senior lost the first set before winning the next two, 6-3, 6-4.
UC Davis concludes play at the facility Sunday when it takes on Portland at 9 a.m.
