PORTLAND, Ore. - The UC Davis men's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2010 season with a 5-2 victory over Portland State Friday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center in Portland. The Aggies opened the match by claiming the doubles point and then won four times in singles. Toki Sherbakov, Tyler Lee and Connor Coates all picked up doubles and singles wins for UC Davis (3-2).
Portland State (1-2) won the first doubles match to finish, but the Aggies won the next two. Coates and Sherbakov evened doubles with an 8-3 victory over Kyle Erickson and Alex VanDerschelden at No. 2. Nic Amaroli and Tyler Lee followed at No. 3 with the clinching win after an 8-5 decision over Jeff Cero and Matt Erickson.
Leading 1-0 heading to singles, UC Davis picked up wins at No. 3 and No. 1 to take a 3-0 advantage. Sherbakov was the winner at No. 3 as he defeated Kyle Erickson, 6-1, 6-1. Nick Lopez won at the No. 1 spot as he cruised past Chris Rice, 6-4, 6-2.
The Vikings stayed alive with a win at No. 2, but Coates gave the Aggies the decisive victory at No. 6. The freshman disposed of Cero, 6-1, 6-1, to put UC Davis on top 4-1. The final point for the Aggies came off of the racquet of Tyler Lee as the senior defeated Matt Erickson, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).
UC Davis continues play at the same facility Saturday against Montana State before wrapping up play on the trip Sunday with Portland.
