Aggies Defeat Dons, Saturday's Match Postponed

Feb. 5, 2010

DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 6-1 non-conference victory over visiting San Francisco Friday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The teams played singles first before concluding with doubles. The Aggies (1-3), competing in their home opener, won five out six in singles to clinch the overall victory before winning two out of three in doubles.

The match was moved up one hour in an effort to avoid an unsettled forecast for the afternoon. With rain predicted for Saturday, the team's scheduled match with Sonoma State has been postponed. A make-up date has not been determined.

Against USF (1-2), Sidney Brady was the first to finish at No. 6 when she completed a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Yurie Hashiguchi. Lauren Curry made it 2-0 when she defeated Melinda Akerbrant, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4. The Dons pulled within 2-1 as Jennifer-Lee Heinser posted a 6-3, 6-3 win against Desiree Stone at No. 1. The remaining three matches went to the Aggies.

Ellie Edles defeated Alana McMahon, 6-1, 5-7, 6-4, at No. 5, and Herzyl Legaspi provided the clinching victory at No. 3 when she outlasted Cecilia Gratian, 7-6 (6), 7-5. The final singles match to finish was on court two where Dahra Zamudio overcame a first-set loss to Julia Wartenburger to prevail 5-7, 6-1, 7-5.

UC Davis also picked up wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Curry and Edles teamed at No. 2 to defeat Hashiguchi and Wartenburger, 8-4. Noelle Eades and Zamudio claimed the clinching win at No. 3 by the same score against Akerbrant and Blair Reed.

With the postponement of Saturday's match, UC Davis is next scheduled to play on Feb. 12 at Sacramento State.
