BERKELEY, Calif. - Nathan Slater pitched 6.0 shutout innings and struck out four to lead UC Davis to an 8-0 victory over Cal Wednesday at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif. With the win, the Aggies move to 3-1 overall while Cal drops to 3-1.
Slater picked up his first win of the year while Cal pitcher Kevin Miller got the loss as he gave up nine hits and four earned runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Daniel Cepin led the UC Davis offense, hitting 5-for-5 with one run and three RBI while Eric Johnson was 3-for-5 with one run and two RBI.
Cal was led by catcher Chadd Krist who was 2-for-3 with one double.
The Aggies struck early and got on the board in the first inning when Johnson singled to center field to bring in Scott Lyman and Justin Schafer. UC Davis scored another two runs in the fourth inning and took advantage of two Cal errors. After singling through the left side, Scott Heylman advanced to second on an error by the pitcher, then moved to third. Cepin then hit his own single which brought home Heylman while Cepin got all the way to third base on an error by second baseman Brian Guinn and a balk by Miller. Lyman then doubled down the left field line to bring Cepin home and to give the Aggies the 4-0 advantage.
Another two runs were scored in the sixth inning off of more errors by the Bears. Cepin picked up his second and third RBI of the day when a single up the middle brought in Heylman and Alex Dreyfuss.
UC Davis put up their final two runs of the day in the ninth inning when Kyle Mihaylo singled to third base to bring in Seth Batty. Johnson scored later off a single to center field by Dreyfuss.
The Aggies return to action Thursday when they host BYU for a three-game series at Dobbins Baseball Complex. Thursday will feature a doubleheader wih the first game beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday's second game will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
