DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to Loyola Marymount in its home opener Friday afternoon at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Lions claimed the doubles point by winning two of three before sweeping singles. Nic Amaroli and Tyler Lee teamed for UC Davis (4-4) in doubles for the Aggies' lone win.
LMU (1-5) opened doubles with a win at No. 1 as Ivan Lopez and Otto Sauer defeated Connor Coates and Toki Sherbakov, 8-4. The Lions clinched the match's first point when Geza Bazula and Jack Zapala posted an 8-5 victory over Josh Albert and Nick Hallchurch at No. 3. The final doubles match to finish was at No. 2 where Amaroli and Tyler Lee defeated Renzo Maggi and Borja Malet, 8-6.
Four of the singles matches ended in straight sets. It took a super tiebreaker to decide match-ups at No. 4 and No. 5. Maggi eventually prevailed at No. 4 over Tyler Lee, 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (11-9). At No. 5, Johan Berhof outlasted Coates, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0 (12-10).
UC Davis concludes its homestand Saturday when it faces San Francisco at noon.
