MORAGA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team played just one day at the Gael Classic in Moraga, Calif., after rain on Sunday prevented the completion of the tournament.
On Saturday, the Aggies picked up several wins in the only day of competition, advancing in both the doubles and singles draw.
Toki Sherbakov and Nick Lopez had a solid performance in their first doubles match against the No. 2 seeded team from California, defeating the pair of Ben McLauchlan/Bo Katsorav, 8-6. McLachlan of New Zealand was ranked in the top 50 in the world in junior tennis. The other opponent, Katsarov, was one of the top 15 recruits nationally before attending California.
Chris Aria had an excellent comeback in his first singles match, defeating his opponent from Saint Mary's, Sherif Hamdy of Egypt, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12-10). In the match tie-breaker for the third set, Aria was behind, 7-2. He also was down two match points before winning the tie-breaker, 12-10.
Connor Coates and Aria also picked up wins in the first round of singles competition, while George Horowitz had a quarterfinal win in Flight D singles.
The completion of the Gael marks the end of the fall schedule for the Aggies. UC Davis will enjoy an extended break, before beginning competition on Jan. 22 vs. Santa Clara in Santa Clara, Calif.
