DAVIS, Calif. - Liliana Alvarez and Heidi Kucera set Schaal Aquatics Center records in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, respectively, but San Jose State took a 156-144 victory over the UC Davis women's swimming and diving team Saturday in a nonconference dual meet.

Alvarez won the 100 breaststroke in a record-setting time of 1:02.79, an NCAA "B" Consideration Standard time. The new mark bests the previous record of 1:03.49 set by Pacific's Ziada Jardine Jan. 19, 2008.

Kucera's time of 2:17.83 in the 200 breaststroke bested her own previous record time of 2:19.06, set Feb. 1, 2008 against UC Santa Barbara. Kucera won the event and Alvarez finished second in a time of 2:18.23.

Kucera also won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:52.32 and the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:06.82 to post three individual wins on the day.

Kayleigh Foley set a Schaal Aquatics Center record of her own after recording a 100 freestyle split time of 51.38 as the leadoff swimmer in the Aggies' 400 free "A" relay. She won two individual events, with first place finishes in the 50 freestyle (24.01) and 100 freestyle (51.65).

The meet was a back-and-forth affair with each team trading off event winners. UC Davis' 200 medley "A" relay team of Ashley Chandler, Alvarez, Megan Leung and Foley combined to win the first event of the day with a time of 1:44.44, but San Jose State came back with a win in the 1000 freestyle.

After Kucera's 200 freestyle win, the Spartans took the 100 backstroke as Rudie Guerrero edged out Chandler with a time of 56.65 in the event. Alvarez then picked up the win in the 100 breaststroke for UC Davis, but Heather Denman and Julia Craddock went one-two in the 200 butterfly to keep the Spartans on pace with UC Davis.

Kucera and Alvarez' one-two finish in the 200 breaststroke helped boost UC Davis and Linda Hermann's victory in the 500 freestyle gave the Aggies a slight edge after 12 events. Hermann clocked in at 5:02.89.

The Spartans began to pull away however, taking the top two places in the 100 butterfly as well as both diving events, but Kucera and Hermann took the top two spots in a tight 200 individual medley race. Kucera touched the wall first in a time of 2:06.82 with Hermann just behind in second with a time of 2:07.08.

Entering the final event of the day, the 400 freestyle relay, UC Davis needed only 11 points to catch San Jose State, but the Spartans edged out the Aggies' "A" squad of Foley, Sabrina Cochrane, Hermann and Kucera in a frantic sprint to the finish. San Jose State's time of 3:26.75 to UC Davis' mark of 3:27.49 gave the Spartans the victory. The Spartans' time also set a Schaal Aquatics Center record, breaking a mark of 3:27.58 set by UC Davis in a dual meet against UC Santa Barbara Jan. 20, 2006.

UC Davis returns to action Sunday hosting Seattle and Loyola Marymount in a double dual meet at Schaal Aquatics Center. The meet is set to begin at 10:30 a.m.
