Titans Sweep Aggies In Big West Showdown

Nov. 5, 2010

Final Stats

DAVIS, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Erin Saddler tallied a match-high 12 kills and two of her team's six aces to lead Cal State Fullerton to a 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 sweep of UC Davis in a Big West Conference women's volleyball match at the Pavilion Friday evening.

The Aggies fall to 16-9 for the year and 7-6 in conference matches. The Titans extend their school-record for season wins, improving to 20-5 overall and hold first place with a 9-2 record in league play.

Senior opposite Melanie Adams had eight kills and a .438 hitting average to lead UC Davis offensively. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Whitson posted a team-best 10 kills to go with four blocks (including two solos). Freshman setter Jenny Woolway had 17 digs while senior libero/outside hitter Kayla Varney added 15, helping the Aggies outdig their foe by a 55-51 margin.

For the Titans, sophomore Kayla Neto chipped in nine kills -- including six in the final set -- while contributing on three blocks. Senior libero Cami Croteau matched Woolway with a team-high 17 digs.

After a 4-1 Titan start, UC Davis rallied back to its first lead at 10-9 on a block by Woolway and junior Katie Denny. However, Saddler hit a kill and served up an ace to highlight a run of five straight, restoring the Fullerton lead to 14-10. Adams scored a pair of kills to cut the edge to 18-16, then Woolway and defensive specialist combined on five digs during a spectacular rally, halving the Titan lead to a single point. UC Davis then tied the frame at 18-18 and again at 19-19 before Fullerton ran off four straight down the final stretch. Cami Croteau posted 10 digs in the first set while Woolway tallied eight.

Adams fired three kills to help the Aggies craft a 13-10 lead in the second set, only to have the Titans answer with four straight to reclaim the lead at 14-13. A Whitson kill tied the frame at 14-14 but CSF pulled away with 11 of the next 13 points. Junior Leah Maurer notched a kill and two blocks in that finish, helping the Titans hit .265 for the frame.

Neither team led by more than two for most of the third. A rare dig-kill by Gabrielle Dewberry put CSF up by a 13-11 margin and two Saddler kills helped hold that lead to 15-13. UC Davis tied the set three more times before Neto hit back-to-back kills to restore the Titan advantage to 20-18. Whitson posted a solo stuff against Neto to later tie the set at 20-20 then delivered two more kills to provide UC Davis with a 22-21 lead. However, Fullerton held the Aggies scoreless the rest of the way; Maurer recorded two kills in the final push to help her team finish the sweep.

Friday's win represents the 17th 3-0 sweep by Cal State Fullerton in 2010.

UC Davis returns to action against Long Beach State on Saturday to complete a key home weekend of conference matches.
