PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Pilots put on a shooting clinic in a 75-60 win over the UC Davis men's basketball team Saturday, at the Chiles Center in game four of the Athletes in Action Classic. For the game, Portland shot 62 percent from the floor and 64 percent from three point range.
Despite outscoring the Pilots by seven in the second half, the Aggies couldn't overcome a 22-point halftime deficit.
Freshman Tanner Riley led the way for the Pilots, coming off the bench to score 15 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Portland had four players in double figures, including Jared Stohl who had 11 points on 4 of 5 shooting.
Eddie Miller led the Aggies in scoring, tallying 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting, to go along with four rebounds. Joe Harden chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds, as the only other player to reach double-figures for UC Davis.
The Pilots had a 16-6 lead to start the game, using three Stohl threes in the early minutes to take a 10-point advantage. Riley capped off the 10-2 run with a three at the 13:18 mark.
Portland was on fire from behind the arc in the first half, converting on 7 of 8 attempts in the first 11 minutes, with another Riley three that put the Pilots on top 27-8.
The Pilots led by 21, before a Miller three brought the score to 29-11, with 6:56 on the clock. UC Davis couldn't gain any momentum however, as an 8-0 Portland run gave the Pilots their biggest lead of the game with a 37-11 score at the 4:04 mark.
The Aggies managed to end the half on a 10-6 run, capped off by a Ryan Sypkens three with 36 seconds on the clock, making the score 43-21 at the intermission. Portland shot a sizzling 71 percent (17-24) from the floor and 78 percent (7-9) from three in the first 20 minutes.
UC Davis outscored the Pilots 13-8 to start the second half, using five Harden points and a Miller tip dunk that brought the score to 51-34 with 13:20 on the clock. The Pilots responded with a quick 6-0 run, pushing the lead back up over 20 with a 57-34 score.
Using some full-court pressure, the Aggies cut into the deficit with a 10-2 run, making the score 59-44 with 8:26 remaining in the game. UC Davis got as close as 14, after Josh Ritchart's three made the score 66-52 with 4:40 on the clock.
The Aggies couldn't get any closer however, as Portland led by double-digits the rest of the way, en route to a final 75-60 score.
"It was unbelievable," said head coach Gary Stewart when asked about the Portland shooting. "It was an avalanche. We knew what they were going to do and we knew who was going to shoot them. I thought we did a good job for the most part of getting out to contest shots."
"You have to give them credit," continued Stewart. "They knocked down shots and it really changed the complexion of the game."
UC Davis will play their final game at the Athletes in Action Classic vs. Wisc.-Milwaukee tomorrow, with a 3 p.m. start time.
