Cal Poly Postgame Reactions (VIDEO)
DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Kevin Schulte set a UC Davis single-game record as he assisted four different Aggies on each goal and the UC Davis men's soccer team took a 4-2 win over Cal Poly in a crucial Big West Conference matchup Saturday at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis, Calif.
UC Davis moves to 6-11 overall and 4-5 in Big West play. With the win, the Aggies earn three points and move back into a tie for third place with Cal State Fullerton with 12 points, bumping Cal Poly back into fifth place in the Big West Conference standings. Cal Poly now stands at 6-6-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the league.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for UC Davis.
Schulte's four assists set a UC Davis single-game record and bests the three assists from Matt DeJong set August, 29, 1999 against Humboldt State.
The first goal of the game came by way of a corner kick from Schulte who found Ethan Shawlee towards the back of the penalty box. Shawlee's header found the upper left corner to put UC Davis up 1-0 at the 30:52 mark.
As play continued, Cal Poly's Evan Richter picked up his second yellow card of the game and was subsequently sent off with less than two minutes left in the first half. The Mustangs would be forced to play the remainder of the game with only 10 men on the field.
The Mustangs didn't lose focus however and scored the equalizer less than two minutes into the second half. Chris Gaschen received the ball in the middle of the 18-yard box with several Aggie defenders surrounding him. As the ball ricocheted around, Gaschen collected a rebound and knocked the ball past UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan to tie the score at one goal apiece.
Cal Poly kept up the offensive intensity and scored a second goal 11 minutes later. In the 57th minute, Junior Burgos sent a through pass down the middle of the field, splitting two UC Davis defenders and finding David Zamora who one touched his shot into the upper right corner.
UC Davis responded with their second goal of the game in the 67th minute. Brady Jimison dribbled the ball to the goal line before passing back to Schulte. Schulte then one-touched a pass across the middle of the 6-yard box to Lance Patterson who scored his team-leading sixth goal of the year.
Just two minutes later, John Joslin scored his third gamewinning goal of the year when Schulte fed him a pass on the outside of the 18-yard box. Joslin one-touched a strike which glanced off a Cal Poly defender and went past Mustangs goalkeeper Patrick McLain to put UC Davis up 3-2.
With four minutes left in the game, UC Davis went ahead for good on a score by Dan Reese. Jimison sent a pass through two Cal Poly defenders and Schulte and Reese sprinted past the Mustangs backline for a two-on-one against McLain. Schulte collected the ball, dribbled towards McLain then slipped a past to Reese who was running on his left. Reese touched the ball past McLain for the Aggies' fourth goal of the game.
The Aggies also held a pregame ceremony for seniors Chris Beville, Nathan Javadi, Derek LeBon, Ryan McCowan and Jason Santos who played their final home game at UC Davis.
UC Davis closes out the regular season at UC Riverside Wednesday at 7 p.m.
