FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman Alex Aguiar scored the equalizer in the 69th minute to send the game to overtime, but Cal State Fullerton put away a goal with three minutes left in the extra period to take a 2-1 men's soccer victory in a crucial Big West Conference matchup Wednesday at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, Calif.
The win gives Cal State Fullerton 12 points and sole possession of third place in the Big West Conference standings. Due to Cal Poly's overtime victory over UC Santa Barbara, the Mustangs picked up three points and moved into fourth place with 11 points, dropping UC Davis, with nine points, to fifth.
The Aggies' record moves to 5-11 overall and 3-5 in league action and are still in position to secure a trip to the conference tournament as the top four teams advance. The Titans now stand at 6-8-2 overall and 4-4 in the Big West.
Freshman goalkeeper Omar Zeenni held the Titans scoreless until the 57th minute when a hard cross from Celso Alvarez bounced off Zenni's chest. Michael Denny was on hand for the Titans, however, and knocked the loose ball into the net to give Cal State Fullerton the 1-0 lead.
Aguiar and UC Davis answered 10 minutes later. Dan Reese sent a pass over to an unmarked Aguiar whose shot from 25 yards out sailed past freshman goalkeeper Bryan Escalante and into the upper left corner of the goal.
The match seemed like it would need a second overtime period, but Cal State Fullerton's Nick Posthuma scored with three minutes left in the extra period. Posthuma took a cross from Alvarez, then took a shot from the corner of the penalty box that got past Zeenni to give the Titans the golden goal victory.
Zeenni finished with three saves for UC Davis. Offensively, Jason Santos and Lance Patterson led the Aggies with three shots each.
UC Davis hosts Cal Poly on Senior Day Saturday at noon at Aggie Soccer Field.
