UC Davis Drops 3-1 Contest vs. Cal Poly

DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis women's soccer surrendered two first half goals, en route to a 3-1 loss vs. Big West foe Cal Poly on Sunday, at Aggie Stadium in Davis, Calif. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Aggie Soccer Field, but because of rain and field conditions, the women played their first ever game at Aggie Stadium.

Whitney Sisler recorded a pair of goals for the Mustangs, to bring her total to eight on the season. With the loss, UC Davis dropped to 6-9-1 overall with a 1-5 mark in Big West Play. Cal Poly improved to 7-9-1 and 2-4-1 in conference play.

Despite the bad weather conditions, there were plenty scoring opportunities in the first half for both teams. Cal Poly held a slight advantage in shots, with a 14-12 edge in the first half. The Mustangs made the the most of their opportunities however, converting on a pair of first half goals.

Sisler scored the first goal of the game in the 37th minute, tallying her seventh goal of the season on a rebound from Monica Hemenez's previous shot. Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead just minutes later, thanks to an unassisted goal by Morgan Miller in the 43rd minute.

In addition their 12 shots, UC Davis had seven corners and seven shots on goal in the first frame, but they weren't able to find the back of the net. After the final minutes of the first period, the Mustangs kept a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.

The scoring chances for both teams continued in the second half, with UC Davis getting on the board in the 63rd minute, after Kiele Argente scored on a rebound from Ashley Edwards' previous shot.

Cal Poly managed to answer in the 66th minute, thanks to Sisler's second goal of the game, that gave the Mustangs a 3-1 lead.

The Aggies rattled off 23 shots for the game, but couldn't manage another score in the final 25 minutes. Despite a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal, the UC Davis loss came after a final 3-1 score.

Kathleen Brandl and Maria Magana split time in goal for the Aggies, while Brooke Gauvin earned the win for Cal Poly after 11 saves.

UC Davis will be back in action next weekend, when they play host to UC Riverside on Friday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
