Cal Poly Picks Up 2-1 Win Over UC Davis

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Cal Poly scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the game and the UC Davis men's soccer team could not overcome the deficit as the Mustangs took a 2-1 Big West Conference win Sunday afternoon in San Luis Obispo, Calif.

UC Davis remains in fourth place in the conference standings and is still in position to earn a trip to the Big West Conference Tournament. The Aggies drop to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in league play while Cal Poly moves to 5-5-3 overall and 2-2-2 in conference action.

Cal Poly struck early with a goal at the 9:53 mark as Junior Burgos sent a cross from 20 yards out into the box which found David Zamora on the left post. Zamora headed the ball past Aggie goalkeeper Omar Zeenni to put the Mustangs up 1-0.

Around 10 minutes later, Burgos would score a goal of his own after receiving a pass from Wes Feighner and firing a shot from the left side into the upper right corner.

UC Davis fired back with three straight attempts starting in the 22nd minute. Alex Henry's shot at 22:23 was wide left while Cal Poly goalkeeper Patrick McLain had to save a shot from Lance Patterson in the 26th minute. Henry's next attempt was blocked.

In the second half, UC Davis earned a corner kick in the 60th minute, but Joslin's shot off the corner kick was blocked.

Cal Poly responded with back-to-back shots of their own, but both were saved by Zeenni.

Freshman Kevin Schulte scored his first career goal in the 79th minute. Henry played the ball from the right side across the box and found Schulte streaking down the middle who shot the ball past McLain to prevent the shutout.

UC Davis had a few more attempts in the closing minutes of play, but could not find the equalizer.

Zeenni recorded a season-high six saves while McLain had four saves.

UC Davis stays on the road for a Wednesday night matchup at Cal State Fullerton Oct. 27. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
