LOS ANGELES - Heidi Kucera and freshman Liliana Alvarez went one-two in the 200 breaststroke and the UC Davis women's swimming and diving team took second place in eight individual events in its season-opening meet against UCLA and Loyola Marymount at Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles Friday afternoon.

UC Davis defeated LMU 217-76, but fell to UCLA by a score of 165-121 to open the season with a 1-1 overall record. UCLA also topped LMU 171.5-100.5.

The Aggies opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay as the "A" squad of Linda Hermann, Alvarez, Megan Leung and Kayleigh Foley combined for a time of 1:45.32. UC Davis' "B" team finished fifth with a time of 1:47.76.

In the 1000 freestyle, Grace Benefield and Bridget Bugbee finished second and third, respectively as Benefield clocked in at 10:39.50 while Bugbee recorded a time of 10:42.94.

Hermann finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:52.03 while Kucera placed fourth in a time of 1:54.35. Freshmen Sabrina Cochrane and Maya Sprinsock were sixth and seventh in the event with Cochrane recording a time of 1:56.76 and Sprinsock finishing in a time of 1:58.88.

UC Davis' top finisher in the 100 back was freshman Joann Liang who was fourth in a time of 59.68. Leung was sixth in a time of 1:01.12 while Victoria Pichay was eighth, clocking in at 1:02.28. Katelyn Griffin finished tenth, recording a time of 1:03.60.

Alvarez' second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke earned UC Davis key points as she clocked in with a time of 1:04.79. Morgan Lee and Julie Peri finished sixth and seventh while Alyssa Britt tied for eighth with a time of 1:08.81. Jenah Dawson was fourth to lead the Aggies in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:09.65 while newcomer Karley Troup was seventh in a time of 2:12.79.

The 50 freestyle was the closest of all the events as a mere .03 seconds divided first place from fourth place. UCLA's Ting Qua was first in a time of 24.23 while LMU's Isabella Zhang tied for second with Emma Drysdale from UCLA with both touching the wall in a time of 24.25. Foley ended up fourth for UC Davis as she was barely outtouched in a time of 24.26. Ashley Chandler was fifth with a time of 24.34, Samantha Capozzo was tenth with a time of 25.20 and freshman Devon Demont was 11th in a time of 25.62.

Foley finished second in the 100 freestyle in a time of 52.15 while Cochrane and Capozzo came in fifth and sixth while Buffy Ajimura was seventh in a time of 55.52.

Hermann was second in the 200 backstroke, Liang was third and Benefield was fourth while Pichay came in eighth in the event.

Kucera's winning time in the 200 breaststroke was 2:20.04 while Alvarez' second-place time was 2:21.31. Morgan Lee finished fourth while Julie Peri came in sixth place.

Bugbee and Madeline Talt finished second and third, respectively, in the 500 freestyle with Bugbee clocking in at 5:12.66 and Talt finishing in a time of 5:17.77. Troup was sixth with a time of 5:25.77. UC Davis also finished second and third in the 100 butterfly as Leung touched the wall in a time of 57.81 to claim the No. 2 spot while Dawson was third with a time of 59.36. Griffin was sixth and Demont was seventh.

Kucera also took second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:08.47 while Dawson was fourth and Benefield was seventh. Lee finished in eighth with a time of 2:17.60.

UC Davis closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay as Chandler, Bugbee, Cochrane and Foley combined for a time of 3:34.17. The "B" relay of Liang, Griffin, Ajimura and Capozzo finished in a time of 3:42.32.

In one-meter diving, Jennifer Meyer finished fifth with a score of 195.45 while Erica Stricker was seventh, scoring a 188.40. Lauren Jesse was eighth in her Aggie debut and recorded a score of 176.70. Jesse finished second on the high board with a score of 200.03 while Meyer was third and Stricker was fourth.

UC Davis will travel to Stockton, Calif. to face Pacific and Nevada Friday, Oct. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at Pacific's Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
