SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Peter McGlynn scored two minutes into the second overtime period and 17th-ranked UC Santa Barbara edged the UC Davis men's soccer team 2-1 Saturday night in a Big West Conference matchup at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif.
The match was the league opener for UC Davis who moves to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the Big West with the loss, the Aggies' fifth straight. UC Santa Barbara is now 4-3-2 on the year and move to 1-1 in conference action.
The Gauchos took a 1-0 lead with a goal only nine minutes in as James Kiffe's cross found Michael Nonni for a header shot into the right corner of the net.
UC Davis countered with a goal in the 33rd minute from Lance Patterson, his fifth of the season. The Aggies earned a corner kick which Nick Grigoriev sent into the box towards Alex Aguiar, but Aguiar's header attempt was blocked by a UC Santa Barbara defender. The rebound found a waiting Patterson who sent a header of his own into the back of the net.
UC Santa Barbara outshot UC Davis 8-1 in the second half, but failed to score and regulation ended with the score knotted at one goal apiece.
The teams remained even through the first overtime period, before McGlynn's gamewinner in the 102nd minute gave UC Santa Barbara the 2-1 win.
Patterson led UC Davis with two shots while Grigoriev, Aguiar and Alex Henry each registered a shot. Joe Eubanks, Chris Hunter and Danny Barrera each posted three shots for UC Santa Barbara..
Ryan McCowan had two saves for the Aggies while Eric Reyes also recorded two saves.
The Gauchos outshot the Aggies 14-5 and held a slim 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
UC Davis returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 6 as the Aggies host 12th-ranked UC Irvine at 7 p.m. under the lights of Aggie Stadium.
