Nathan Santos Postgame Interview (VIDEO)
DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team picked up their second straight Big West Conference victory as Nathan Javadi's header goal in the 96th minute gave the Aggies a 1-0 victory over UC Riverside Wednesday at Aggie Stadium in Davis, Calif.
The goal, Javadi's first of the year, came off a corner kick from freshman Kevin Schulte. Schulte's kick found a streaking Javadi on the far post who headed it into the upper right corner for the golden goal victory.
With the win, UC Davis moves to 4-8 overall and is now 2-2 in Big West play. UC Riverside is now 3-8-1 overall and remains winless in the Big West with an 0-4 record.
The Aggies outshot the Highlanders 7-4 in the first half, but strong defense on both ends made for a scoreless period. Chris Beville and Alex Henry's back-to-back shots in the 13th minute were both blocked by UC Riverside defenders while two attempts by Lance Patterson in the 33rd minute both went wide of the goal.
UC Davis started out the second half by nearly scoring in the 49th minute when John Joslin's attempt at the 49:11 marked ricocheted off a UC Riverside defender and found a waiting Jacob Barron. Barron attempted to one-touch the ball on the ground into the lower left corner, but the shot hit the post and bounced back into play before being cleared by the Highlanders.
In the 77th minute, UC Riverside's Cesar Diaz blasted a shot on goal, but the ball curved just over the crossbar and out of play.
Javadi's header was the only shot of overtime.
Omar Zeenni recorded one save in goal for UC Davis while UC Riverside's Nick Goldreich had two saves.
Patterson led all players with five shots while Joslin had two attempts for the Aggies. Three different players recorded two shots for the Highlanders.
UC Davis returns to action Saturday as the Aggies face Cal State Northridge for the second time in eight days. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. in Aggie Stadium.
