Joey Wilson Places Fourth at Cal Open

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Joey Wilson finished fourth at 165 pounds and five other UC Davis wrestlers competed at the 34th Annual California Collegiate Open hosted by San Francisco State University Saturday.

Wilson defeated San Francisco State's Ian Wrenn 14-4 to start the day but fell by a narrow 2-0 decision to Stanford's Kyle Meyer and dropped to the wrestleback rounds. Wilson then won three straight matches to advance to the third-place bout, picking up wins over Cal Poly's Travis Rasmussen and Cal Baptist's Lamar Reed. In the consolation final, he came up just short and fell 6-4 to Cal Poly's Steven Vasquez.

Morgan Flaharty finished 1-2 at 141 pounds. He defeated unattached wrestler Anthony Thurgood with a fall at the 3:23 mark then lost by a 10-5 decision in his next bout. In the wrestleback rounds, Flaharty met his third unattached opponent of the day and suffered a 10-1 defeat.

At 174, Joshua Esparza also posted a 1-2 record on the day. He began with a 16-0 technical fall victory over San Francisco State's Lucas Duckwall, then lost by a 10-2 major decision to Troy Goodban of Cal State Bakersfield. Esparza then lost 6-4 to conclude his run at the tournament.

Adam Lymath and John Thurston also finished 1-2 in their respective weight classes. Lymath, competing at 184, defeated Cal Baptist's Kyle Mathews by fall at the 2:40 mark. Thurston won a 4-3 decision over Dylan Berg of Cal Baptist at 285 pounds.

Chris Armendariz competed at 125 and was 0-2.

UC Davis closes out their home dual meet season with back-to-back matchups. The Aggies host San Francisco State Friday, Feb. 5 in the popular "Beauty and the Beast" competition at 7:00 p.m. at The Pavilion. UC Davis will then host Pac-10 rival Stanford Saturday, Feb. 6 at 6:00 p.m. in Hickey Gymnasium.
