TEMPE, Ariz. - UC Davis was defeated by No. 30 Arizona State, 5-2, Saturday in a non-conference women's tennis match at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe, Ariz. It was the season opener for the Aggies, who began a two-match road trip in Arizona. The Sun Devils (2-0) swept through doubles before winning the first three singles matches to finish.
ASU dominated doubles by winning at No. 1 by an 8-0 margin. Matches at No. 2 and No. 3 ended with 8-1 and 8-2 decisions, respectively. That gave the hosts a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Kelcy McKenna was the first to win at No. 1 when she defeated Desiree Stone, 6-3, 6-0, to put ASU up 2-0. Next off the court was Hannah James, who posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Herzyl Legaspi at No. 3. The clinching match came at No. 5 where Sianna Simmons outlasted Ellie Edles. The Aggie freshman won the first set, 7-6, before Simmons came back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-1.
The next two matches went to the Aggies. Freshman Lauren Curry came back from a one-set deficit to defeat Ashlee Brown at No. 4. Brown won the first set 6-3, but Curry claimed the second by the same score. The Aggie led the third set, 4-2, before Brown retired due to an injury.
At No. 6, Sidney Brady also posted a come-from-behind victory. She defeated ASU's Amanda Martin, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3. The remaining singles match went to the Sun Devils to account for the final margin.
UC Davis concludes its road trip Sunday when it faces Arizona at 8 a.m. PST.
