SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team opened its 2010 season Saturday by splitting a doubleheader with host Santa Clara and UC Santa Cruz. The Aggies were defeated by the Broncos, 4-0, before posting a 5-1 victory over the Banana Slugs. Nic Amaroli and Toki Sherbakov each won in singles and doubles against UCSC.
Sherbakov and Connor Coates started things for the Aggies in doubles with an 8-3 win over UC Santa Cruz's Parker Larsen and Ryan Sass at No. 3. Following a loss at No. 1, the Aggies countered with the clinching doubles win at No. 2. Amaroli teamed with Tyler Lee to outlast Erich Koeing and Ian Stanley, 9-8, while winning the tiebreaker by a 12-10 margin. The victory gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead heading to singles.
Hunter Lee was the first to finish in singles after defeating Aron Morrill, 6-0, 7-6 (6), at No. 4. UC Davis made it 3-0 when Amaroli followed with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 victory over Andre Halabi at No. 6. The clinching win for the Aggies came at No. 3 where Sherbakov came from behind to defeat Silvo Chiba, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Chris Aria also posted a win at No. 2 to account for the Aggies' fifth point of the match.
Against Santa Clara, the Broncos posted wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before winning the first three matches that finished in singles in straight sets to account for the 4-0 victory.
UC Davis returns to action on Jan. 22 when it hosts Sonoma State in its home opener at 1:30 p.m.
