LAS VEGAS - The UC Davis men's soccer team picked up their first win of the 2009 season with a 3-0 shutout over Robert Morris Friday at the UNLV Nike Invitational at Peter Johann Memorial Field in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aggies improved to 1-1-0 on the season while the Colonials dropped to 0-2-0.
The first half started out evenly with neither team taking a shot until the 14th minute when the Aggies struck first. Julian Godinez's attempt sailed wide, but set off a string of UC Davis shots. The Aggies took nine shots while allowing the Colonials only one attempt until sophomore Rene Cuellar connected on a Riley Newport corner kick in the 38th minute for UC Davis' first score.
At halftime, the Aggies had posted 11 shots to a mere four by Robert Morris.
UC Davis jumped to an early attack in the second half with three quick shots in the first eight minutes. In the 68th minute, Godinez blasted a shot from the top of the box and found the back of the net to give the Aggies a 2-0 advantage.
Late in the second half, Robert Morris began their attack with three consecutive shots of their own, but junior goalkeeper Ryan McCowan was there to stop every Colonial attempt.
McCowan finished with five saves.
Junior Jason Santos sealed the victory for UC Davis as he and Chris Leer used a give-and-go play to send Santos on a breakaway and give the Aggies their final goal in the 86th minute.
Santos and Godinez led the Aggies with three shots apiece. UC Davis had 17 total shots, six of which were on goal.
For Robert Morris, Sean Riley and Henry Montano each had two shot attempts. Freshman goalkeeper Nick Barber had three saves for the Colonials.
UC Davis returns to Peter Johann Memorial Field to face Central Arkansas Sunday in a 10:30 am matchup.
