IRVINE, Calif. - UC Davis senior Paul Marcoux scored in the 106th minute to lift the Aggies to a 2-1 double overtime victory over UC Irvine in the Aggies' Big West Conference opener. UC Davis is now 4-6-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play while UC Irvine suffered their second straight conference loss and falls to 6-4-0 overall.
The Anteaters struck first and early when Corey Attaway scored his first goal of the season in the tenth minute. Attaway accepted a pass from Irving Garcia and slipped the ball through traffic and inside the right post to give UC Irvine the 1-0 advantage.
The Aggies answered with a goal of their own in the 29th minute. Julian Godinez sent a free kick into the box where Nathan Javadi headed it in to tie the score 1-1. The goal was Javadi's first of the season.
The two teams carried the tied score into halftime.
In the 63rd minute, UC Irvine was awarded a penalty kick following a hand ball inside the penalty box. UC Irvine junior Amani Walker stepped up and took the shot, but the it was saved by UC Davis goalkeeper Ryan McCowan.
Amani attempted another shot in the 64th minute but McCowan was there to save it again.
A shot by Marcoux in the 87th minute sailed wide and regulation ended with the score still tied. The battle continued in the first overtime period. Garcia attempted the only shot of the period, but the try was wide.
Midway through the second overtime, Michael Garrick found Marcoux breaking away and Marcoux was able to put the ball past UC Irvine Victor Chinchilla to score the gamewinner for the Aggies.
UC Irvine took 11 shots to UC Davis' four, while McCowan recorded five saves for the Aggies.
UC Davis continues Big West Conference play Sunday at Cal Poly. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
