ALBUQUERQUE - The UC Davis men's soccer team was edged by New Mexico 2-1 Friday at the TLC Plumbing/Nike Invite in Albuquerque. Paul Marcoux scored the Aggies' lone goal in the 39th minute and Julian Godinez had three shots.
The two teams started off strong on offense, trading shots back and forth throughout the opening minutes. Godinez had two of his three total shots within the first 20 minutes but his first shot went high while his second was saved by New Mexico goalkeeper Justin Fite.
In the 39th minute, Godinez crossed the ball in for Marcoux who headed it in from the corner of the penalty box. It was the third goal of the season for Marcoux and the Aggies took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
New Mexico started the second half with a few powerful shots. A shot by Lobo midfielder Stephen Brown was saved by UC Davis' Ryan McCowan. After three straight corner kicks, Brown scored the equalizer with a shot from 20 yards out.
Aggie freshman Dan Reese went for a header shot in the 66th minute but the shot went wide. Jacob Barron and Julian Godinez had their shots blocked in the 69th and 70th minutes.
In the 71st minute, Reese received a yellow card which led to a penalty kick goal from Simon Ejdym, giving the Lobos the 2-1 victory.
New Mexico recorded 13 shots to UC Davis' nine.
McCowan had three saves while Fite posted two for the Lobos.
The Aggies will take on Binghamton Sunday in a 10:00 p.m. PT match at the UNM Soccer Complex.
