Final Stats

Davis, Calif. - The UC Davis men's soccer team fell to Washington 2-1 in a double overtime match Sunday at Aggie Soccer Stadium. Washington's Brent Richards scored the golden goal midway through the second overtime to give the Huskies the win.

UC Davis was the stronger team offensively in the first half with eight shots to Washington's four. In the ninth minute, Paul Marcoux's header shot on goal sailed over the crossbar while Julian Godinez took a shot at the 19:06 mark that was blocked by a Washington defender.

Godinez finally capitalized off an assist from Jason Santos in the 26th minute. Santos found Godinez on a run down the left side and Godinez hit a powerful shot that sailed past Washington goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins and into the top right corner.

The Aggies continued to attack throughout the first half. Michael Garrick subbed in for UC Davis and proceeded to take two back-to-back shots, but neither found the back of the net. UC Davis took their 1-0 advantage into halftime.

In the second half, Washington commanded the field on offense and had a staggering 15 shots while UC Davis failed to take any throughout the entire period. Finally in the 79th minute, Richards hit the equalizer with a blast from 10 yards out to tie the score 1-1.

As the two teams entered overtime, play evened out and both sides shot the ball relentlessly. In the 107th minute, however, Richards dribbled through a few UC Davis defenders and slipped a shot in past Aggies goalkeeper Ryan McCowan for the golden goal.

McCowan had a season-high six saves while Hawkins had two for Washington.

"These games are intense and meaningful. Every single game has meaning, said Aggies head coach Dwayne Shaffer. "If you want to be a great team, you have to win at home. We've played two very good Pac-10 opponents and unfortunately have come out on the losing end. We had a great crowd and great support today. We did everything we needed to do to get a result in that game."

The loss marks the end of a nine-game home win streak for UC Davis in Aggie Soccer Stadium. The streak dated back to 2007.

UC Davis is back on the road as the team heads to Albuquerque, N.M. to participate in the Nike/TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational hosted by New Mexico. The Aggies will face New Mexico Friday, Sept. 18 at 6:00 p.m. UC Davis then takes on Binghamton Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
