Final Stats
IRVINE, Calif. - No. 1 UC Irvine scored multiple run in four innings, which included an eight-run seventh, and defeated UC Davis 19-6 in the second game of a Big West Conference series at Anteater Ballpark Saturday afternoon. The win gives UC Irvine the series victory.
The Aggies fall to 10-39 overall and 3-17 in conference play while the Anteaters are now 39-12 and 19-1. UCI has now won each of their conference series with their final series coming next weekend.
UCI scored solo runs in the first and second innings and tacked on three runs in the third, four in the fourth, eight in the seventh and two in the eighth on 19 hits. UC Davis score a run in the first inning to take a lead and tied the game at 2-2 in the third. They added another run in the sixth and three over the final two innings.
Senior Grant Hirneise led the Aggie offense with three RBIs while junior Ty Kelly went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI. In addition, Justin Schafer matched a season high by pushing his hitting streak to 10 games. Ryan Scoma and Eric Johnson drove home the other Aggie runs.
For Irvine, Ronnie Shaeffer went 4-for-6 with two runs scored, three RBIs, a double and a home run. Eric Deragisch scored a game-high three runs to go with three hits and two RBIs. In addition, Ryan Fisher added three hits and three RBIs.
Christian Bergman pitched six innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits in his ninth win of the season. Scott Lyman pitched four innings in the loss for UC Davis.
The Aggies jumped out a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Ryan Scoma hit a deep sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Scott Heylman to score from third base. UCI matched the effort in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game and took the lead with another run in the second.
UC Davis tied the game at 2-2 in the third off an RBI single from Kelly that scored Schafer from third. The Anteaters then reeled off seven runs through the next two innings and the eight-run seventh to take a commanding lead.
Hirneise singled home a run in the sixth and then doubled in two runs during the eighth inning. Johnson homered in the ninth to give UC Davis three runs over the final two innings. The Anteaters also platted two runs in the eighth off a two-run shot from Shaeffer.
