DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis defeated Montana, 6-1, in a non-conference women's tennis match Sunday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies swept doubles to earn the first point before winning five more times in singles. The win improves UC Davis to 11-10 on the year while Montana fell to 6-11.
The Aggies' Jenna Kappel and Andrea Phillips opened doubles with an 8-2 victory against Cara Lehman and Kayla Moyse at No. 3. Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone followed at No. 1 with an 8-3 win over Martyna Nowak and Liz Walker. In addition, Herzyl Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio defeated Amanda Bran and Rebecca Bran, 8-6, at No. 2.
The first singles match to finish was a result of a win by Jessica Harris at No. 6 as the Aggie downed Lauren Gibson, 6-1, 6-0. Zamudio followed at No. 2 with a 6-3, 6-0 win against Rebecca Bran to give UC Davis a 3-0 lead.
The overall win was clinched by Legaspi at No. 4 as the Aggie junior overcame a 4-1 first set deficit to defeat Nowak, 7-5, 6-0. After the Grizzlies claimed a win at No. 1, UC Davis closed with victories at No. 3 and No. 5. Stone defeated Amanda Bran at No. 3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Kappel defeated Moyse, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7).
UC Davis is next in action when it closes out its regular season Friday at home against Sacramento State.
