Ninth-Inning Rally Lifts Nevada Past UC Davis

April 28, 2009

Final Stats

RENO, Nev. - Joe Kohan hit a walk-off single to right field to cap a two-run ninth-inning rally and lift Nevada to a 3-2 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference baseball game at Peccole Park Tuesday night. The Wolf Pack claim their second one-run victory over the Aggies to sweep the season series.

Nevada jumps to 22-20 overall with their fourth straight win while UC Davis is now 7-32. Nevada won the first meeting 2-1 in 11 innings on March 10 at Dobbins Stadium.

UC Davis entered the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead following a two-run eighth inning. With one out, the Wolf Pack runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Westley Moss would score the game-tying run on another wild pitch. With two outs and the bases loaded, Kohan drove a ball over the right fielder's head to score Waylan SIng Chow from third and give Nevada the walk-off victory. The run was unearned and was part of four Aggie errors in the game, three of which came on catcher's interference calls.

The Aggies put together a two-out rally in the eighth inning to claim a 2-1 lead. Junior Ty Kelly, who started his first game of the season in left field, doubled home sophomores Daniel Cepin and Justin Schafer. Cepin singled to open the inning and Scahfer was hit by a pitch to set up Kelly's team-leading 14th double of the season.

Nevada scored its first run of the game in the third inning off an RBI double from Shaun Kort that scored Moss, who had reached on another catcher's interference call. Moss scored two of the Wolf Pack's three runs while Kahan and Tyson Jaquez each had two hits.

Freshman Joseph Medeiros, sophomore Grant Bauer and junior Kyle Mihaylo joined Kelly and Cepin as the only Aggies with hits in the game.

For the third straight game, UC Davis received a solid performance from its starting pitcher. Sophomore Tom Briner pitched five innings and allowed only one run on four hits while striking out a career-best eight batters in the no-decision. Freshman Scott Lyman got the list but struck out two batters.

Daniel Tinlin earned the win and was one of five Nevada pitchers to make an appearance in the game. Tyler Graham pitched the eighth and gave up two runs on two hits.

UC Davis continues its five-game road swing with a three-game Big West Conference series at Long Beach State over the weekend. All three games can be heard live through ucdavisaggies.com beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
