DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis softball team was swept by Cal State Fullerton in a Big West Conference softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at La Rue Field. The Titans belted two home runs in the first game on their way to a 10-3 victory. The Aggies nearly rallied back from a four-run deficit in the second game before falling 5-4. Julie Stauder, Marissa Araujo and Alex Holmes each drove in two runs on the day for UC Davis (20-18, 4-4 Big West).
The Aggies took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two. Kelly Harman started the frame with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Araujo. Holmes followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Harman and give the Aggies their first lead of the day.
The Titans continued to trail by the single run until scoring five times in the fourth. Trina Harrison had the big hit of the inning with a three-run homer that made it 3-1 at the time.
UC Davis would battle back with two runs in the sixth. Belinda Paine started things with a single to center to extend her hitting streak to 17 games. Stauder and Erin Emde both singled to load the bases with still no outs. After a pair of groundouts to force runners at home, Araujo doubled to drive in Sarah Axelson and Kylie Fan to make it 5-3. Titan reliever Ari Cervantes avoided further trouble by forcing a groundout to end the inning.
The Aggies were back at it in the bottom of the seventh as Bianca Castillo led off with a single. With two outs, Stauder singled to drive in Castillo from second to keep the rally alive and pull UC Davis within 5-4. The game then ended on fielder's choice groundout.
Cal State Fullerton (18-17, 6-2 Big West) opened the scoring in the first game with five runs in the second inning. Francesca Gonzales and Cervantes each homered in the inning.
UC Davis scored once in the third on an RBI-single by Stauder. The Aggies added two more runs in the fourth on run-scoring singles by Holmes and Castillo. The Titans pulled away in the sixth with five more runs to account for the final score.
The two teams return to La Rue Field Saturday when they close out their three-game series at noon.
