DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team concluded its regular season with a 6-1 loss to Sacramento State on Friday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The No. 49 Hornets took two of three in doubles before adding another five wins in singles. The win improved Sacramento State to 16-8 on the year while UC Davis fell to 11-11.
Desiree Stone picked up a win at No. 2 singles for UC Davis after Herzyl Legaspi teamed with Dahra Zamudio to win at No. 2 doubles. The match marked the last at home for five Aggie seniors. They include Jessica Harris, Jenna Kappel, Andrea Phillips, Randi Schuler and Emma Shapiro.
Doubles began with a win by the Hornets at No. 1 where Melissa Valenzuela and Katrina Zheltova defeated Schuler and Stone, 8-2. Sacramento State clinched the doubles point when Maria Meliuk and Aileen Tsan defeated Kappel and Phillips, 8-3, at No. 3. Legaspi and Zamudio finished doubles with a 7-6 (6) victory at No. 2 against Clarisse Baca and Joyce Martinez Gutierrez.
All six of the singles matches finished in straight sets. Stone won her match at No. 2 against Valenzuela, 6-4, 7-6 (5). Zheltova picked up a win at No. 1 while Schifris, Baca, Gutierrez and Tsan also claimed wins.
UC Davis is next in action next Friday when it begins play at the Big West Tournament in Indian Wells. The No. 7 Aggies will face second-seeded UC Irvine in a quarterfinal match.
