DAVIS, Calif. - For the third time in six matches, a UC Davis women's tennis match was decided by a single point. This time, the Aggies prevailed as they defeated Montana State by a score of 4-3 on Saturday at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. After sweeping doubles, UC Davis received a big boost from the bottom half of its singles lineup to secure the wins needed to improve to 8-8 on the year.
The first doubles match to go the Aggies' way was at No. 2 where Herzyl Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio defeated McKenzie Hilmer and Stephanie Jasper, 8-1. Next off was the duo of Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone at No. 1 with an 8-4 victory over Ali Griffin and Missy Harris. That win clinched the initial point of the match for UC Davis. Jenna Kappel and Andrea Phillips were also victorious at No. 3.
After the dust settled in singles, the Bobcats (5-7) had posted wins in the first three positions. That would not be enough, though, as the bottom half of the order went to the Aggies. The first to finish was Kappel at No. 5, who defeated Hilmer, 6-2, 6-1, to give UC Davis a 2-0 lead.
Jessica Harris followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Andrea De La Torre at No. 6, and the Aggies were on the brink of victory with a 3-0 lead. The next point went to MSU as Harris picked up a win at No. 2 to pull the Bobcats within 3-1. Legaspi was next to finish and provided the clinching victory with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Griffin at No. 4.
UC Davis, which played Pacific on Friday, resumes Big West action Sunday when it hosts UC Riverside at 11 a.m.
