DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team fell in a hard-fought battle with Pacific, 5-2, Friday afternoon in a Big West Conference match at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Tigers swept through doubles before four of the six singles matches went three sets. The match lasted nearly four hours and 20 minutes.
UC Davis (7-8, 1-4 Big West) claimed wins in singles from Dahra Zamudio and Herzyl Legaspi.
Pacific (6-6, 2-0 Big West) opened doubles with an 8-4 win at No. 3 by Svenja Arens and Kateryna Nezhura over Jenna Kappel and Andrea Phillips. The Tigers took a 1-0 lead when Olga Gumenyuk and Jenifer Widjaja defeated Legaspi and Zamudio by the same score at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point.
Widjaja picked up a straight sets win at No. 1 singles to make it 2-0. Nezhura defeated Jessica Harris at No. 5 to put Pacific in front 3-0. Legaspi was next to finish at No. 3 as she battled back from a one-set deficit to defeat Arens, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. The win kept the Aggies alive, trailing 3-1.
Gumenyuk closed the door on UC Davis when she completed a comeback of her own with an 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 6 against Emma Shapiro. Pacific won again at No. 5 before Zamudio was last off in a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 marathon victory over Jolanta Twarowska at No. 2.
Friday's match was just the beginning of a busy weekend for UC Davis at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Aggies next face Montana State Saturday at noon before resuming Big West play Sunday against UC Riverside.
