Six-Run Seventh Inning Gives Pacific Series Sweep Over Aggies

March 29, 2009

Final Stats

STOCKTON, Calif. - Pacific scored six runs in the seventh inning and added three more in the eighth to erase a one-run deficit and defeat UC Davis 15-9 Sunday afternoon at Klein Family Field. The victory gives the Tigers a three-game Big West Conference series sweep over the Aggies.

UC Davis drops it's sixth straight game to fall to 3-17 overall and 0-3 in conference. The Tigers avenge a last year's sweep at the hands of the Aggies to improve to 10-12 overall and 3-0 against conference competition.

The Aggies held a 7-6 lead heading into the eighth inning before allowing nine runs over the next two innings. The Tiger's huge seventh inning was highlighted by a solo home run from Brian Martin, a two-run double from Nick Longmire and a two-run single from Joey Centanni. The Tiger runs in the eight came off a wild pitch, a fielder's choice and an RBI-single from Ben Gorang.

Kurt Wideman went a perfect 5-for-5 with a double and an RBI to lead the Tigers. Longmire finished with a game-high three RBIs and three runs scored while teammate J.B. Brown also had three RBIs. Overall, the Tigers knocked out eight extra-base hits and had six players with an least one RBI.

For the Aggies, junior Ty Kelly repeated his performance from Saturday with two doubles to bring his team-leading total to nine on the season. He also tied the game-high with three runs scored. Senior Ryan Scoma and redshirt freshman Tony Bongiovanni led the team with two RBIs. Bongiovanni hit a home run for the second straight game as well.

David Rowse allowed one run off five hits in 2.1 innings of relief to pick up his first run of the season. Mark McCain closed things out for his first save. The loss went to the Aggies' Scott Lyman.

UC Davis scored a single run in the first inning to take an early lead. Pacific then scored four combined runs in the second and third innings to jump ahead 4-1. Brown hit a two-run homer run during a three-run third inning.

After the teams traded single runs in the fourth inning, UC Davis platted four runs in the fifth inning to reclaim the lead at 6-5. The big fifth inning was made possible behind a two-run homer from Bongiovanni. The Aggies also capitalized on a fielding error and a wild pitch to score a run.

Pacific brought home another run in the bottom half of the fifth to tied things at 6-6, but the Aggies responded with another run in the sixth to take a one-run lead at 7-6. The Tigers then put up six runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

The final Aggie run came in the ninth inning off a two-out RBI-double from Jared Thompson. Kelly doubled during the second at bat of the inning.

UC Davis takes a break from conference competition next week with two games against Fresno State and a four-game series at San Diego State. The week begins Tuesday as the Aggies host Fresno State at 2:30 p.m. That game will be live on ucdavisaggies.com.
