LONG BEACH, Calif. - Alex Holmes threw an eight-inning shutout and also provided the offense for UC Davis as the Aggies split a softball doubleheader at Long Beach State on Saturday. The host 49ers posted a 2-0 victory in the first game before the Aggies won by the same score in extra innings. They were the first Big West Conference games for both teams.
The dramatic second game was scoreless through seven innings before the fateful eighth inning. In the process, LBSU (20-14, 1-1) had held UC Davis (16-15, 1-1) scoreless through 14 innings on the day. That changed in the eighth with two outs and Erin Emde at first. Sarah Axelson kept the inning alive when she reached on an error, and Holmes delivered a two-run double to put UC Davis on top 2-0.
The sophomore returned to the circle in the bottom of the inning and retired the first two 49ers before loading the bases. Kristen Pocock then grounded out as Holmes completed the shutout. She struck out four with one walk while scattering five hits. Holmes improved to 6-7 and picked up her third shutout of the season.
For the game, UC Davis outhit Long Beach State, 9-6. Julie Stauder and Kelly Harman each went 2-for-3. Five additional Aggies collected a hit, including Belinda Paine. The senior had a hit in the first game as well and extended her hitting streak to 11 games. Holmes was one of three Aggies to have a double in the game. Marissa Araujo and Kelly Harman were the others.
In the first game, Long Beach State scored a run in the second and an unearned run in the fifth on its way to a 2-0 shutout. The 49ers outhit the Aggies, 6-5, in a game that didn't feature an extra-base hit. Jessica Hancock suffered the loss while allowing just one earned run in 4.2 innings of work. She struck out four.
The two teams conclude their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
