DAVIS, Calif. - Min (Brian) Moon hit a solo home run in the fifth inning and singled home two more runs during a four-run sixth inning to help lead Stanford to a 5-2 victory over UC Davis in a non-conference baseball game at Dobbins Stadium Wednesday afternoon. The Aggies scored both of their runs in the seventh inning and were led by a game-high three hits from freshman Joseph Medeiros.
The Cardinal have now won two consecutive games over the Aggies and improve to 5-10 on the season. UC Davis falls to 3-14 heading into Big West Conference action this weekend.
Medeiros finished 3-for-4 and scored a run to help lead the Aggies. He also contributed defensively from behind the plate as he threw out two would-be base stealers in the first inning. Redshirt freshman Tony Bongiovanni and sophomore Justin Schafer accounted for the two UC Davis RBIs. Junior Kyle Mihaylo finished with two hits in the game, one of which was a double.
Moon led the Cardinal with two hits, three RBIs and a run scored as the team's designated hitter. Kellen Kiilsgaard and Joey August doubled home runs during back-to-back at bats in the sixth inning.
Moon opened the scoring in the fifth inning with his first career home run, which was a solo shot to left center field that cleared the wall by about 10 feet.
Stanford then piled on four more runs in the sixth inning to jump ahead 5-0. Colin Walsh opened with a walk and stole second. Following a pop out to right field, Kiilsgaard doubled to score Walsh and was then doubled home in the next at bat by August. A walk and infield single loaded the bases for Moon, who singled to right field to bring in two runs and cap the big inning. Junior Scott Heinig got out of the inning by striking out the next two batters.
UC Davis rallied in the seventh inning with two runs off three hits. Three straight singles from Medeiros, Scott Heylman and Schafer brought in a run. Schafer capped the single streak with an RBI to center field to score Medeiros from second base. Heylman advanced to third on the play due to a fielding error on the Cardinal center fielder. Bongiovanni then grounded out to first base as a pinch hitter to plate Heylman. Stanford ended the threat with a ground out during the next at bat.
Max Fearnow pitched three scoreless innings and struck out two batters to earn his first win of the season. Drew Storen closed the game to earn his first save. Overall, Stanford received a total of eight shutout innings from five different pitchers.
For the Aggies, freshman Anthony Kupbens made his first career appearance and struck out two batters in the loss. Junior Andy Suiter had his best showing of the year in relief as he tossed two scoreless innings and struck out a batter.
The Aggies return to competition on Friday when they head up to Stockton for the Big West Conference opener against Pacific. The game begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be simulcast on ucdavisaggies.com and KDVS 90.3 FM.
