FULLERTON, Calif. - Senior Marcos Orozco (125 pounds) and sophomores Ricky Alcala (285) and Barrett Abel (149) each won both of their wrestleback matches to place third and lead UC Davis to a fourth-place finish at the Pacific-10 Conference Championships Monday night at Titan Gym.
Boise State won the overall team title for the second year in a row with 172.5 points. Oregon State was second with 128 and Cal State Bakersfield took third iwth 124.5 points. The Aggies rebounded after finished eighth last year to score 102.5 and place fourth.
With the NCAA's new method of picking wild cards, the Pac-10 was limited to only 20 automatic qualifiers and thus had true second-place matches to determine the second automatic qualifier from 149, 157, 197 and 285. The runner-up and third-place finishers faced off to determine the AQ. Alcala and Orozco both receive automatic bids into the NCAA Division I Championships.
Alcala dominated the night en route to his first berth into the NCAA Championships. He opened with an 11-2 major decision over Lenny Romero of Cal Poly and then pinned fourth-seeded Samuel Zylstrat of Boise State to finish third. In the true second-place match, Alcala defeated Clayton Jack of Oregon State. He was the only third-place finishers to knock off a runner-up.
Orozco won his first match over No. 8 Micha Ferguson (Cal Poly), 6-0, and then knocked off No. 7 Brian Owens of Boise State to place third. It marks the third straight year Orozco will make the trip to the NCAA Championships.
Abel took a medical forfeit over Tyler Parker (Stanford) in his opening match and then pinned No. 6 Teddy Astorga (CS Fullerton) at 1:03 to place second. The win over Astorga avenged Abel's opening loss of the tournament. Abel was pinned by Heinrich Barnes of Oregon State in the true second-place bout to miss out on the AQ. Abel is still in contention for an at-large berth.
UC Davis advanced a total of five wrestlers to the third-place matches. Senior Jon Clark (184) and sophomores Brandon Low (133) and Abe Otrambo (197) all won their opening matches to earn spots in their respective third-place matches. All three lost close decisions to finish fourth, which were career-best showings.
Senior Nexi Delgado opened his day at 141 pounds with a loss but battled back to win his fifth-place match, 6-4, over Cameron Tietleman of Stanford. Sophomore Joey Wilson finished sixth on the day while seniors Dustin Noack and Tyler Bernacchi forfeited to place eighth.
The remaining at-large bids into the NCAA's will be announced on March 11. The tournament takes place March 19-21 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
