Aggies Break Out In Causeway Win Over Sac State

March 14, 2009

Final Stats

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sophomore Scott Chew pitched the final eight innings and struck out eight batters, and UC Davis scored three runs in the fifth inning and four more in the eighth to earn a 9-3 victory over Sacramento State during a Causeway Cup baseball game at Hornet Field Saturday afternoon.

The win snaps a six-game slide for the Aggies and improves them to 3-11 overall. The Hornets are now 5-8 with the loss and have dropped six of their last seven games to the Aggies.

Chew entered the game in the second inning after starter Tyler Bremer was pulled due to tightness in his arm. Chew responded with the best game of his Aggie career as he recorded eight strikeouts and allowed only one earned run off eight hits in eight innings of work to pick up the victory. It was the second career win for Chew, who normally serves as the Aggies' middle reliever.

"To come in and give us eight strong innings is tremendous," said Aggie head coach Rex Peters. "We've been looking for guys to do that all year."

Junior Ty Kelly and senior Ryan Scoma both finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs while redshirt freshman Eric Johnson doubled home two runs. Sophomore Grant Bauer and freshman Scott Kalush drove home the other Aggie runs. Kelly and Kalush also boasted doubles in the contest. In addition, Bauer walked and scored twice despite not recording a hit in the game.

Hunter Martinez and Blake Crosby each drove in runs and had multiple hits for the Hornets. Aaron Crouch also had two hits in the game for Sac State. Starter Brandon Sandoval earned the loss with five earned runs off nine hits over six innings.

UC Davis opened with a run in the first inning to take its first lead of the series. Kelly doubled down the left field line with two outs and was brought home the next at bat behind Scoma's single up the middle.

Sac State tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI-single from Crosby. The Aggies countered with three runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to jump ahead 5-1. Scoma drove in the first run of the fifth inning on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. Johnson then doubled down the left field line to score two more runs. In the sixth inning, Kalush came up with sophomore Rikki Foster on second base and doubled to left field to bring him home.

The Hornets cut the lead to 5-3 with two runs in the seventh inning. Martinez singled home a run and another scored on a fielding error.

The Aggies would add four more runs in the eighth inning to give themselves a comfortable lead and the eventual victory. The inning, which matched a season-high run total, was highlighted by a bases-loaded walk from Bauer and a two-run double from Kelly. A third run also scored on Kelly's double but was caused by a fielding error on the right fielder.

UC Davis and Sac State conclude the Causeway rivalry tomorrow afternoon as they return to Dobbins Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest. The game will feature live audio on ucdavisaggies.com.
