DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team was defeated by UC Santa Barbara, 5-2, Saturday in the Big West Conference opener for both teams at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Gauchos swept through doubles before claiming four more points in singles. Dahra Zamudio and Emma Shapiro each picked up singles victories for UC Davis (4-4).

Doubles began with a UCSB victory at No. 1 as Jill Damion and Michelle Murphy defeated Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone, 8-2. The Gauchos clinched doubles when Sofia Novak and Asagi Onaga posted an 8-3 victory over Sidney Brady and Jenna Kappel.

UC Davis evened the score at 1-1 after Zamudio defeated Damion, 6-2, 7-6 (4), at No. 2 singles. UC Santa Barbara (2-0), however, would win the next four matches to finish. Shapiro claimed the second Aggie point when she defeated Bryanna Ojeda at No. 6, 6-2, 7-6 (4).

UC Davis is next in action Feb. 14 when it begins a three-match Big West road trip at Cal State Fullerton.
