SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Jessica Hancock threw a one-hit nine-inning shutout as UC Davis edged Utah, 1-0, Saturday afternoon at the San Diego Classic I. Alex Holmes drove in the only run with a triple in the top of the ninth as the Aggies won their fourth straight game and improved to 9-3 on the year.
Hancock dominated the Utes by allowing just an infield single in the sixth. She struck out nine with one walk. Only one Ute reached second base against Hancock, who retired the final 11 batters she faced. Her effort also extended her streak of not allowing an earned run to 23 innings and lowered her ERA to 0.56.
At the plate, the Aggies managed just four hits. Three of those were singles by Erin Emde, Bianca Castillo and Jessica Gonzalez. The last hit came from Holmes, whose one-out triple in the ninth drove in Randi Golding with what turned out to be the game-winning run.
The match-up with Utah started a four-game stretch for UC Davis at the San Diego Classic I. The tournament is being co-hosted by San Diego and San Diego State. The Aggies face San Diego Saturday evening at 7 p.m. before heading to SDSU Sunday to take on Oregon and Colorado State.
