DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to come from behind and defeat Santa Clara, 4-1, Wednesday afternoon at La Rue Field. Alex Holmes drove in the go-ahead run with a two-run single, and Jessica Hancock improved to 5-1 with a complete-game victory. The win improves UC Davis to 8-3 on the year while Santa Clara fell to 1-5.
The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth by scoring an unearned run. Nicole Picard started the inning by reaching on a passed ball while striking out. She eventually came around to score on a double by Briana Knight.
The Aggies came right back in the bottom of the inning to not only tie but take the lead. With two outs and runners at first and second, Kelly Harman delivered an RBI-single to scored Sarah Axelson with the tying run. Harman advanced to second on the play while Marissa Araujo stopped at third. Holmes followed with another timely two-out hit to drive in both Araujo and Harman to make it 3-1. Holmes scored the fourth run on a throwing error.
Hancock allowed four hits while finishing with 11 strikeouts and three walks. She did not allow an earned run, which lowered her ERA to 0.68. It was also her fourth straight win.
The Aggies received plenty of support from the bottom of the order. The seven, eight and nine spots went a combined 5-for-9. Harman finished 2-for-3 followed by a 1-for-3 effort by Holmes. Jessica Gonzalez posted two hits in three at bats. Julie Stauder, Belinda Paine and Rachel Miller also collected one hit apiece. In addition, Miller threw out a pair of Broncos on the base paths.
UC Davis is next in action this weekend when it takes part in the San Diego Classic I.
