DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis was defeated by Cal State Northridge, 4-3, Sunday in a Big West Conference women's tennis match at the Matador Tennis Complex. The close match featured the Matadors taking two of three in doubles before a split in singles to clinch the win. Jenna Kappel won twice for UC Davis, which fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the Big West.
Cal State Northridge (2-5, 2-1 Big West) opened doubles with a win at No. 1. Brooke Doane and Evgeniya Vertesheva defeated the Aggie duo of Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone, 8-1. Next to finish was No. 3 where Kappel and Andrea Phillips posted an 8-3 victory over Julie Onishenko and Whitney Paluch. That set the stage for the deciding match at No. 2 as Nina Jaworowski and Nigora Sirojiddinova prevailed, 8-3, over Herzyl Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio.
Singles began with a Matador victory at No. 1 where Vertesheva won in straight sets over Stone. Emma Shapiro was next to finish at No. 6 as she defeated Onishenko, 6-2, 6-4, to pull UC Davis within 2-1. Kappel helped the Aggies tie the score when she posted a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 against Sirojiddinova.
The next two matches to finish went to the Matadors to clinch the victory. Paluch defeated Harris at No. 5 followed by a three-set win by Doane at No. 3 against Legaspi. Zamudio accounted for the final point for the Aggies when she defeated Jaworowski in three sets at No. 2.
UC Davis is next in action Friday when it plays at San Francisco.
