IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Davis women's tennis team went 1-1 on Saturday as it battled Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine in a pair of Big West Conference matches. The Aggies began the day with a 5-0 victory at Cal State Fullerton before falling 7-0 at No. 65 UC Irvine. With the split, UC Davis is 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the Big West.
The Aggies had little trouble defeating the Titans (1-4, 0-2) as they won all doubles and singles matches that finished. Randi Schuler and Desiree Stone defeated Leslie Bullock and Shelly Injejikian, 8-2, at No. 1. Herzyl Legaspi and Dahra Zamudio teamed at No. 2 to dispose of Brandy Andrews and Jerusha Cruz, 8-4. At No. 3, it was Jenna Kappel and Andrea Phillips shutting out Lani Agsalud and Karina Akhmedova, 8-0.
Taking its 1-0 lead into singles, UC Davis picked up wins at No. 3 through No. 6. The matches at the top two positions did not finish since the outcome of the overall match had already been clinched.
Kappel defeated Akhmedova at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3. At No. 4, Jessica Harris was a 5-2, 6-3 winner over Cruz. Emma Shapiro and Phillips were also straight sets winners at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Zamudio and Legaspi were competing at No. 1 and No. 2 with both battling in third sets before their matches were stopped.
UC Irvine (3-2, 2-0) won two of three doubles matches and all six in singles in the afternoon match-up at the Anteater Tennis Stadium. Schuler and Stone were once again victorious at No. 1 for the Aggies. The match was originally scheduled for Monday but was moved up to Saturday due to an unsettled forecast for Monday.
UC Davis concludes its road trip Sunday when it takes on Cal State Northridge.
